A witness testified Tuesday that a white farm owner ordered workers to beat a black former employee and throw him to lions, and that the victim called out as his battered body was tossed into the animals' game park enclosure.
"He was still alive," Robert Mnisi testified, the South African Press Association reported.
Mnisi was originally among those accused in the murder, but later agreed to testify for prosecutors against farm owner Mark Scott-Crossley and his employees, Richard (Doctor) Mathebula, 41 and Simon Mathebula, 43 who are not related.
Prosecutors allege Scott-Crossley, Richard Mathebula and Simon Mathebula attacked Nelson Chisale with machetes, tied him up, beat him and threw him into a lion enclosure last January. Police said Scott-Crossley had fired Chisale, who was attacked when he returned to retrieve belongings.
The trial has attracted protesters from the African National Congress and South Africa's Communist Party who see Chisale's death as another example of apartheid's legacy of racist violence.
Mnisi testified that Scott-Crossley ordered him and Richard Mathebula to toss Chisale's body into the lion enclosure. Simon Mathebula was not at the scene at the time, SAPA quoted him as saying.
"We couldn't have stopped him (Scott-Crossley). He looked very angry," Mnisi testified. "He's a white person. We became scared when he told us to do that. We were afraid to die." Mnisi said Scott-Crossley threatened to kill the men if they spoke of the killing.
